At the heart of the Spell to Write and Read (SWR) curriculum is a phonogram-based approach. Children practice saying, writing, and reading phonograms, developing a deep understanding of the sounds that make up the English language. Unlike traditional methods where spelling is taught separately or later, SWR uses phonetic spelling as the primary tool to teach both writing and reading from the very beginning.
One of the benefits of the Spell to Write and Read program is that you pay only for the tutor’s time—there are no additional costs for the materials your child uses. This approach makes quality, research-based literacy instruction more accessible to families.

Reading Comprehension
This is one of the most effective tools we’ve encountered for improving a student’s reading comprehension. The program is divided into five levels, each containing 78 carefully selected reading passages on a wide range of interesting topics. During each lesson, students have three minutes to read a short passage and answer multiple-choice questions that test their understanding of stated facts, implications, and general reasoning.
The questions cover a variety of important skills, including detecting sequence, identifying the main idea, recognizing facts, making inferences, and more. Even completing just two to three lessons per week can lead to significant improvement in reading comprehension.
One of the unique benefits of this program is that students can track their own progress over time, which motivates continued effort and growth. Each lesson includes questions that range in difficulty—from ones accessible to beginning readers to those challenging enough for advanced learners—making this curriculum flexible enough to be used with a wide range of students, from beginners all the way to post-college levels.
